Caruth Fund Gives Record Grant to SDBD
The partnership of the Caruth Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas and Safer Dallas began after previous Caruth chair Ruth Altshuler attended a presentation by Charles T. Terrell and Jack Hammack. Seeing the potential to make an important difference in Dallas, she approached the current chair of the Caruth Fund, Charles Wylie, who then inquired about additional information from our leaders and police chief David Kunkle.
The decision was made that the Caruth Fund would give a three-year grant of $15 million to Safer Dallas Better Dallas. The $5 million that was applied for the first year resulted in the complete fulfillment of the Dallas Police Department's Wish List #1, which included purchasing dashboard cameras, car cages and other vital equipment in the day-to-day activities of our officers. The next step taken was working closely with the Rand Corporation to discover how to make the most out of the remainder of the grant.
The Caruth Foundations grant of $15 million is the largest ever given by their Foundation and the largest ever given in the United States by an outside entity to a police force. Two members of our own Steering Committee help guide the Safer Dallas project, Brent Christopher and Jay Cooke.
The Rotary Club of Dallas
Safer Dallas Better Dallas received a generous grant of $100,000 from a leading Dallas citizen toward our AR-15 assault rifle program. In addition, giftthis donor offered a challenge grant to the Rotary Club of Dallas, promising to whatever the Rotary club raised in 2006.
Safer Dallas then presented this challenge to the Rotary Club, which went on to raise an impressive $100,000 under the leadership of Craig Hutton. This resulted in the original donor matching these funds to total in $300,000 towards the AR-15 program.
Scott Walker
Scott Walker, a community - involved business leader in Dallas, joined on to the Safer Dallas project after recognizing the difference that he could make in our city. He gave $50,000 towards our AR-15 program, which helps to arm our officers with the necessary equipment to fight today's criminals.
Andrews Distribution Company
The Andrews Distribution Company partnered with Safer Dallas Better Dallas at an early stage to sponsor and host the event that kicked off our public information campaign last fall. They also made a generous gift to Safer Dallas Better Dallas, which helps to maintain this campaign. Andrews Distribution is represented on our Steering Committee by Barry Andrews and Mike McGuire.
